Power to Gas: the adventure continues in Fos-sur-Mer!

Presentation of Jupiter 1000: its challenges and work done by each partner.
The Power to Gas Adventure: perspectives on the Jupiter 1000 demonstrator

“The Power to Gas Adventure” is a film by GRTgaz about the rollout of Jupiter 1000, France’s first industrial demonstrator to transform renewable electrical energy into synthetic gas.

With contributions from all the project’s stakeholders, the film gives us a tour of the site and outlines the two-fold challenge that it faces: improving the storage of decarbonized energy to ensure the balance between production and consumption, and, beyond this ecological benefit, positioning Power to Gas as an economically viable solution.

The film also reviews the three innovative technologies in use:

  • hydrogen production via water electrolysis;
  • CO2 capture from the flue gases of an Ascometal industrial boiler installed near to the site;
  • and methanation, which involves combining hydrogen and recycled CO2 to produce synthetic methane for injection into the gas network.

All of these are technologies already well known. However, this is the first time that they are being used together in a coordinated way.

A partnership project

“The Power to Gas Adventure” is a chance to find out more about the role of companies working alongside GRTgaz on the ground, and the benefits linked to their involvement in the project. These partners include:

  • McPhy  which offers two electrolysis technologies (alkaline and PEM);
  • Khimod which installs the methanation unit;
  • Leroux et Lotz which is responsible for CO2 capture and transport;
  • The French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission (CEA), which conducts tests on the demonstrator to assess the reliability and effectiveness of each operational block and performs life cycle analyses and technical-economic studies alongside RTE, France’s transmissions system operator;
  • The Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR), France’s main producer of 100% renewable energy, which uses the demonstrator to test electricity storage in the form of gas;
  • Teréga, RTE, participate in the studies and support the project financially;
  • Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM) fitted out the platform and built the CO2 pipeline.
