  • Increased level of volumes booked in storage facilities
    • Security of supply strengthened by the creation of the Trading Region France (TRF) and new installations being put into service

Today, Thierry Trouvé, CEO of GRTgaz and Dominique Mockly, President and CEO of Teréga, presented the "Winter Outlook 2018/2019" and the main prospects and challenges for the gas system ahead of the coming winter. This year, the gas transmission operators do not haveanything particularly alarming to report at the start of this gas winter1. GRTgaz and Teréga recall that good management of the underground storage facilities and a sufficient supply of LNG are needed to ensure the smooth operation of the gas system throughout the winter.

Based on projected operating conditions, GRTgaz and Teréga stress that the gas system should be able to meet the demand of all French gas consumers, even in the event of an exceptionally cold spell. This analysis is based on the capacity offered to shippers as well as the level of volumes booked for supplying the network at the various entry and exit points (cross-border interconnections, LNG terminals, underground storage facilities). On 1 November 2018, the level of volumes booked in the storage facilities totalled 128 billion kWh (TWh), the highest level since 2010. Regulation of storage introduced in early 2018 led to an intense injection campaign from May to October.

The Winter Outlook 2018/2019 takes into account the 42% increase in North/South capacity flows made possible by the €872m investment related to the implementation of new infrastructures required for the TRF. It also takes account the market mechanisms created as part of the implementation of the TRF single area on 1 November 2018, such as locational spread, already tested last winter. A revised Vigilance info indicator informs market actors of the possible use of the market tools during the gas day and for the following 5 days.
