The development of innovative solutions for the climate

GRTgaz is actively taking part in the energy transition in response to global warming and the scarcity of resources.

The promotion of the efficient use of natural gas all along the value chain and the development of renewable gases bear witness to our commitment to combating global warming, while improving public health at the same time.

Promoting the development of biomethane

GRTgaz is convinced that carbon-free energy is our future, which is the reason why it wants to turn the substitution of natural gas by renewable gas into a reality, by reaching 10% of renewable gases in its network by 2030. GRTgaz is making this possible by enabling producers of biomethane to connect to its network. Biomethane is a purified biogas, produced by fermenting organic matter, that has the same properties as natural gas and can be injected into gas networks.

The use of biomethane contributes to the recovery of waste and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, while also generating income, local jobs and a virtuous circular economy cycle.

Storing renewable electricity as gas

GRTgaz is developing the storage of renewable electricity in the form of gas, or Power to Gas. Wind farms and solar facilities do not always produce electricity when we need it. Since no storage solutions are available, either production is shut down or the electricity goes to waste to prevent the networks from tripping. Power to Gas uses the unconsumed electricity to produce hydrogen by water electrolysis. The hydrogen can then be combined with carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce synthetic methane in a methanation process. GRTgaz’s network is designed to accept a part of this hydrogen and 100% of the synthetic methane.

This large-scale storage solution maintains the balance of the electricity networks while making full use of wind and solar power capacities and of the existing gas infrastructures. It maximises the share of renewable energies in the consumption of electricity and gas by replacing imported gas with locally produced renewable energy.

Encouraging the use of more environmentally-friendly NGV

GRTgaz plans to develop the use of natural gas as fuel. NGV emits less CO2 than petrol (-25%) and diesel (-10%). Based on a mature technology, NGV is 100% renewable when produced from biomethane (bioNGV), which comes from the fermentation of organic waste.

With 70% fewer nitrogen oxide emissions and hardly any fine particles, NGV emits very few pollutants. Gas-powered vehicles reconcile the fight against climate change and the improvement of air quality.
