Conserving biodiversity

For GRTgaz, it is important to reconcile the development and maintenance of its network with the conservation and continuity of ecosystems.

Our commitments in favour of biodiversity

GRTgaz’s public service contract for 2015-2018 restates the importance of managing gas infrastructures that respect the environment and biodiversity. Conserving biodiversity and allowing it to flourish are two of the top priorities of our sustainable development policy.

90% of GRTgaz’s 32,000-kilometre network in France is in rural zones or forests. The GRTgaz network permanently interacts with the natural ecosystem through the plots of grass-covered land located above the pipelines, which are known as service strips.

There are no buildings or large trees on GRTgaz’s service strips, which constitute open and protected areas, conducive to the movement and reproduction of animal and plant species. This observation has been confirmed by the various studies made by the Natural History Museum, the Forestry Commission, Naturparif and the Lorraine Natural Park. GRTgaz intends to make its network work for ecological continuity and to help to maintain biodiversity by adapting its management practices.

GRTgaz also works with several local NGOs to encourage the presence of pollinating insects, bird fauna and amphibians on its industrial sites. This contribution to local ecological diversity is made by installing beehives, bird trees and insect hotels, and by creating flowered meadows, ponds and eco-pastures.

On 30 January 2014, GRTgaz received a certificate from the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea recognising its commitment to the national biodiversity strategy, on the strength of its practices and its efforts in favour of biodiversity. The goal of the national biodiversity strategy is to conserve, restore, reinforce and promote biodiversity.

In 2015, GRTgaz joined the strategic steering council of the Biodiversity Research Foundation (FRB) in order to contribute to the development of scientific projects and innovative practices related to biodiversity.
